Be the Difference in a Child's Life
BECOME A CASA!

Potential volunteers are community people who are interested and passionate advocates for children who have become wards of the state. CASA cases involve children who are fragile physically and mentally because of abuse or neglect. Applications are screened for falsified information, criminal background, credibility, and core values.  Once approved the volunteer attends an interview session to learn about CASA, volunteer commitment and expectations.

Training consists of text, lectures, and field trips. All training classes are required and make up classes are arranged for any classes missed. Sessions are three (3) hours per week for a period of ten weeks. Appropriate breaks are taken should training be scheduled during holidays.

Topics include

  • Federal and state laws and policies that govern CASA's rights and responsibilities.
  • The court system and legal terminology used by judges and attorneys.
  • Oregon Department of Human Services policies and procedures, resources for families, and children.
  • The roles of the Citizens Review Board, attorneys, and caretakers.
  • Understanding complex family issues of poverty, drug use, abuse, and the impact of these on children.
  • The process of how a CASA interacts with families while gathering information for court hearings.
  • Periodic monitoring of children, while wards of the state, to ensure a safe, and healthy environment.
  • Gathering factual documentation and writing credible reports supporting what is in the child's best interest.
